What is SculpSure?

SculpSure is the perfect treatment for people who struggle to get rid of stubborn body fat, even with diet and exercise. With this FDA-cleared body contouring system, fat cells are specifically targeted and damaged. Once damaged, the fat cells are expelled from the body naturally in the months following the procedure.

The SculpSure laser system allows for customizable treatment plans due to its applicators. At Borealis Laser, we have the applicators for the abdomen, back, sides (love handles) and thighs. With cooling technology, you will not feel any heat from the laser, nor will you experience any damage to your skin. SculpSure’s laser works beneath the dermis.

What to Expect During and After SculpSure Treatments

During treatment, you will either be sitting or lying down. We will then attach SculpSure’s applicators to the body areas we’ve selected during your consultation. When the procedure starts, initially you will feel a cooling sensation. This will help to keep you feeling comfortable treatment because the cooling remains on the entire time. The laser will then cycle on and off, raising the temperature of the targeted fat cells. Most of our patients experience a warm, tingling sensation intermittently, which is easily tolerated.*

After 25 minutes, the treatment is finished and you can resume your daily activities. That’s right, there’s no post-procedure downtime with SculpSure. If you come in during your lunch break, you can head right back to work after we’re done. Depending on your treatment plan, you may need a series of treatments to see optimal results.

Who makes a good candidate for SculpSure?

The ideal candidate for SculpSure is active and healthy, with a few areas of excess body fat that have been resistant to diet and exercise.

The best candidates are within 30 pounds of their ideal weight, with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 for SculpSure body treatments and 49 or less for submental fat (aka a double chin).

Like other fat reduction procedures, SculpSure is not a weight loss treatment.

How long does SculpSure recovery take?

Most patients don’t need any downtime after SculpSure, but here’s what you can expect in the days after your treatment:

You’ll have some inflammation, bruising, and swelling in the treated area. This should start to resolve within a week.
You may also feel sore and tender in the treated area for up to two weeks. If the discomfort bothers you, try applying an ice pack and taking an over-the-counter pain reliever like acetaminophen.
You’ll need to avoid sun exposure on the area that’s being treated for a week before and after the procedure, to prevent any risk of sunburn.
Otherwise, you should be able to go about your normal activities.

Your provider may also recommend doing a few things during that time to maximize your results:

Hydrating especially well can help flush out the destroyed fat cells via urine.
Regular cardio can stimulate your lymphatic system and help flush dead fat cells through sweating.
Gently massaging the treated area for 10 minutes, twice daily, may help prevent lumps.

How long does it take to see results, and how long do they last?

You should notice improvements in 6 to 8 weeks and see optimal results in 12 weeks. The same area can be treated again after two to three months, if further fat reduction is desired.

The fat cells that are killed don’t regenerate, so your results will last as long as you maintain a steady weight through a healthy diet and regular exercise. If you do put on extra pounds, the remaining fat cells can expand and create contour irregularities. It’s also possible for adults who become obese to produce new fat cells.
